New Cahaba Theatre Group opens with readers theater production of ‘Peter and Alice’

There’s a new theater company in town, and its first production takes place this weekend.

The company is the Cahaba Theatre Group, and its Actors at Large division will be presenting a readers theater production of John Logan’s “Peter and Alice.” It’s the first of four or five readers theater productions planned for the season.

What is readers theater? It’s actors reading a script – no real set or lighting design or costumes, etc.

What it has, though, is actors.

“Readers theater the Cahaba Theatre Group way is not sitting and reading a story,” says Barbara Faherty, who is directing this inaugural show. “It is bringing the words to life with minimal movement and a whole lot of energetic talent.”

That talent for “Peter and Alice,” based on a meeting between the woman who inspired Alice in Wonderland and one of the boys who inspired Peter Pan, stars Michael Wilson and Martha Summey in the title roles, with Kenneth Faherty, Jesse Bates, C.J. Steele, Marlena Elliott, Judd McCluney and Sunny Chander also in the cast.

“There is a large pool of talent in Birmingham,” Barbara Faherty says. “Readers theater is an unexplored niche that allows actors and directors to hone their craft without the huge time commitment of a main-stage production, often the difference between acting and not.”

The board of directors of Cahaba Theatre Group includes Wilson (president), Summey (vice president), Barbara Faherty (treasurer), Kenneth Flaherty (secretary) and Brandon McCray (board member). The new group’s mission statement? “To produce theatrical performances in the Birmingham metro area, giving local actors, directors and writers an opportunity to showcase their craft. In doing so, we intend to partner with local venues, promoting them as well as our own dramatic performances.”

In the case of “Peter and Alice,” which is a play that has adult themes and is not for young children, the venue is the Clubhouse on Highland. The show will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at the door or online.

In addition, those attending “Peter and Alice” will hear first the announcement of Cahaba Theatre Group’s next production.

“Peter and Alice,” a readers theater production of the Cahaba Theatre Group, Sunday at 2:30 p.m., the Clubhouse on Highland, 2908 Highland Ave. Tickets are $25.
