Theatre Downtown announces Shepard, Albee and the rest of its season

Theatre Downtown, which recently opened its renovated new space with a production of Mitch Albom’s “Duck Hunter Shoots Angel,” has announced the rest of its 2024-2025 season.

This weekend, you can find some holiday gifts at the theater’s Pop-Up Shop (Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.), and Etc Bham brings its “To Mock a Killingbird” improv to the stage on Dec. 27, 28 and 31.

The next show up is “The Front Page” (Jan. 10-26). Sara James directs the 1928 play, written by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, about a seasoned Chicago newspaper reporter, Hildy Johnson, whose plan is to leave journalism to get married … until a big story breaks.

The theater also announced the following shows on its Facebook page Tuesday:

“A Bright New Boise” (March 7-23): Samuel D. Hunter’s dark comedy about religious extremism set in the break room of a craft store in Idaho.

“Dance Nation” (April 25-May 11): Clare Barron’s play about young competitive dancers was a finalist for the 2019 Pultizer Prize for Drama.

“The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?” (June 13-28): Kelsey Crawford directs Edward Albee’s acclaimed play – also a Pulitzer finalist – about a man who falls in love with a goat.

“Fool for Love” (July 25-Aug. 10): Carron Clark directs Sam Shepard’s play about former lovers May and Eddie, who meet again in a desert motel. It, too, was a finalist for the Pulitzer.

“We Three Queens” (Sept. 5-25): Written and directed by Theatre Downtown co-founder Billy Ray Brewton, who is updating his script (with music by Flannery Whaley) about a former pop group contemplating a reunion tour.

Season tickets are $170.
