Theatre Downtown making progress toward reopening

Birmingham’s Theatre Downtown, which closed its doors about five years ago, is getting ready to move into its new permanent space in November, and the theater plans a “soft opening” with an event on Oct. 26.

Since announcing the new space at 3004 4th Ave. South (next door to Avenue D Events), Theatre Downtown has cast its first show in the space, begun renovations in anticipation of the opening and launched a fundraising effort that has almost reached its goal.

Here’s a look at Theatre Downtown’s progress:

  • The theater will host a Halloween Masquerade Ball and Soft Opening on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available online or at the door.
  • Renovations continue on the new space. Some painting still needs to be done, and the front-of-house areas need some work, but seats are in, and the space is starting to shape up as the new home of the theater.
  • Rehearsals have begun for Mitch Albom’s “Duck Hunter Shoots Angel,” which will officially open the theater Nov. 1-17. Directed by Mike Cunliffe and Jesse Byron, the cast includes Chuck Duck, Lesli Johnson, Jonathan Goldstein, Penny Thomas, Isaiah Pierce, Chelsea Knight, Sophie Grace Bell, Debbie Smith and Jarod Brumley.
  • As of mid-week, Theatre Downtown has raised a little over $8,000 of its $10,000 goal in a GoFundMe campaign. The fundraiser is ongoing, so you can still make your donation.
