Theatre UAB season includes ‘Fun Home,’ ‘Verona,’ more

Theatre UAB presented “A New Brain” in 2022.

Theatre UAB’s upcoming season will include the musical “Fun Home,” “Everybody,” “The 39 Steps” and a modern take on Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” ending with “Sister Act,” a partnership with Red Mountain Theatre.

Here’s a look at what UAB has planned for the year. All performances are at the Alys Stephens Center except for “Sister Act,” which will be at Red Mountain Theatre.

“Fun Home” (Oct. 11-15): Based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, the musical, set in part in a family-run funeral home, is about a young woman’s discovery of her sexuality and her relationship with her closeted gay father.

“Everybody” (Nov. 8-18): Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ modern take on the 15th-century play “Everyman.”

“The 39 Steps” (Feb. 21-25, 2024): A whodunit with a comedic take based on the 1915 novel and 1935 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The play won the U.K.’s Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 2007.

“The Two Gentlemen of Verona” (March 4-8, 2024): An updated version of Shakespeare’s play that has two high-school friends falling for the same girl.

“Sister Act” (April 5-21): Part of Red Mountain Theatre’s season, this musical, based on the movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, is about singer Deloris Van Cartier, who, while hiding in a convent to escape the mob, breathes new life into the old church choir.
